ADIRONDACKS Mountains, Lake Placid Region, New York State
September 20-23, 2013 Due to the overwhelming response to participate, this trip sold out quickly!.
2013 Adirondack's trip. Charles lead three walks for the Toronto Bruce Trail Club. This trip introduced the hiker to the beauty and adventure of mountain walking. I have been walking this region for many years, and I feel that you too could be "hooked" once you start to explore this wilderness area. All walks were done at a moderate level. The degree of overall difficulty is classified as being "moderate strenuous". This hike will appealled to seasoned walkers. The intent will be to walk to the top of two/three mountain peaks, and walk through long valleys. Walks for the day are subject to weather conditions. Accommodation: For the duration of this trip I stayed at the Trail’s End Inn, described as a "1902 Adirondack Lodge In The Heart Of The High Peaks". Meals: Breakfast was included in the price. Breakfast is served by 8:00am and dinner is at 6:00pm. You could have purchased lunch at the Inn for approximately US$10.00: however, if you chose to purchase food for your lunches, there was a general grocery store close to the Inn. Should you decide to bring you own lunches, the Inn provided a small kitchen with a fridge. Some chose to buy wine or beer or other beverages prior to their arrival. Dinners: As restaurants may be busy over the weekend and seeing that we are a larger group, Charles made arrangements with the Inn to serve us dinner for Saturday and Sunday evening. This cost was extra. Maps and Guide Books: Maps, guide books and other ADK material may be purchased from either Lake Placid or The Mountaineer in Keene Valley, or you may contact the ADK directly at 1-800-395-8080. Ask for a map of the High Peak region scale 1:62,500. The guide book that I use is called "High Peaks Region, Guide To The Adirondacks" Twelfth Edition. In addition I also recommend two great reference books, "EXPLORING THE 46 ADIRONDACK HIGH PEAKS" BY James R. Burnside and "DISCOVER THE ADIRONDACK HIGH PEAKS" by Barbara McMartin. The Mountaineer in Keene Valley, within walking distance of the Inn, sells quality outdoor equipment. EMS, another outdoor store is located in Lake Placid. Physical Conditioning: The truth of the matter is the more fit you are the more we will enjoy this trip. On a serious note, the trials are rough, the assents and descents steep, and the weather could turn in a moment's notice. Although some of the distances may not appear to be long in terms of kilometres, the combination of high climbs and rough terrain make it a long day. Equipment: A 25/30 litre day pack should be adequate for the day walks. It should be large enough to carry at all times a complete set of rain gear (mandatory at all times), two to three litres of water, spare T-shirt (poly-pro), cool-weather gear, lunches and some first aid equipment. I will share with the group some first aid equipment. …and finally: Each participant was responsible for their own expenses at the Inn as well as other parking fees. Passports were required for travel into the United States. |
